CERIC* Seminars

*CERIC is a chronic inflammation center at Karolinska Institutet with which COMBINE has several mutual interests and activities. CERIC's goal is to be an internationally leading center in chronic inflammation, the pathological process that links inflammatory disorders such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. For this purpose, we will build on existing, strong research in inflammatory mediators, autoimmunity , chronic inflammatory diseases, and cardiovascular disease at the Karolinska Institutet.

Next CERIC seminar Friday November 20th, 15-16:00 in the CMM lecture hall (L8:00).

Charles Bevins,

Professor of Microbiology and Immunology,

University of California Davis School of Medicine

Paneth Cell Defensins and Intestinal Inflammation: What's the Connection?

Host: Birgitta Agerbeth

As always, refreshments will be served, with coffee and cake before the seminar and drinks and snacks afterwards. Come and listen to ongoing CERIC research, meet your colleagues, and enjoy that it is Friday

You are all most welcome to this year’s CERIC Symposium on November 5-6. The members of our Scientific Advisory Board will visit Karolinska Institutet and CERIC in order to discuss, evaluate, and advise us on future directions.

The CERIC Symposium will follow after the SAB meeting. We have asked our advisors to present their research on Friday afternoon, November 6th starting at 13.00 in the Petrén auditorium on the KI Campus. As you will see from the attached program, it will be an outstanding series of lectures, with Joseph Pfeilschifter (Frankfurt) discussing signal transduction in the inflammatory cascades, Vijay Kuchroo (Boston) T effector cell populations, Peter Libby (Boston) inflammatory mechanisms in atherosclerosis, and Hugh Watkins (Oxford) the genetics of complex diseases. It will be an exciting afternoon – you are all most welcome!

On November 5th, there will be opportunities for poster presentations and discussions with CERIC colleagues and SAB members, followed by a buffet dinner at CMM. You are most welcome also to this event. Please fill in the attached registration form to indicate your attendance at these events.

Looking forward to seeing you on November 5-6!

Best regards,

Göran K. Hansson,  Marie Wahren-Herlenius,  Craig Wheelock

There will be a special CERIC seminar this Friday April 24th,
15-16:00 in the CMM lecture hall (L8:00).

Darryl Zeldin, Laboratory of Respiratory Biology, National Institute of Health, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences

The Cytochrome P450 Epoxygenase Family: Friend or Foe?

Hosted by CERIC

Dr. Zeldin has worked for >20 years on questions related to cytochrome P450s and the bioactivation of fatty acids with a focus on the role of cyclooxygenases in lung and heart function. His career has involved a number of interesting discoveries on the biological role of oxidized fatty acids as well as the response of the lung to environmental agents and allergens. Dr. Zeldin is currently a Senior Investigator at NIEHS and Head of the Laboratory of Respiratory Biology, Adjunct Professor of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, Attending Physician at the Durham Veterans Administration Medical Center and Acting Clinical Director at NIEHS. He has published >150 papers in the area of cyclooxgenase biology and has 4 patents related to the role of eicosanoid biology and its involvement in anti-inflammation and anti-hypertension.

Dr. Zeldin will be at KI from Thursday evening the 23rd through Friday evening the 24th, so any individuals interested in meeting with Dr. Zeldin (either one-to-one or joining him for meals) should contact me as soon as possible.

As always, refreshments will be served, with coffee and cake before the seminar and drinks and snacks afterwards. Come and listen to ongoing CERIC research, meet your colleagues, and enjoy that it is Friday . . .
